Watershed Management

The river is etched on the surface of the earth that is naturally collector and distributor of water flow and material brought back from the upstream to downstream of a drainage area to a higher place of the lower and eventually empties into the sea. Areas where river water obtained is called a rain catchment Watershed.

In simple terms, a basin bounded by two ridges which act as water catchment area (catchment area). Water that falls between the two ridge will flow through the tributaries which then accumulates in the main river channel towards the sea.

Watershed Management is essentially a human-centered process. Although climatic conditions and natural processes initiated and contributed to the occurrence of erosion, but the activities of men that accelerate the process of land degradation. Therefore essential to find solutions to maintain a balance between community needs with the needs of regional and national productivity improvement and at the same time maintaining the sustainability of natural resources and minimize degradation.

Water resources as a key element for life and livelihood of humans and other living things should be managed in a sustainable, just and equitable so that function is maintained to meet adequately the needs of every individual, whether for basic needs and to improve the economy of the community.

Water resources are a renewable natural resource, but its existence is very limited. Therefore its use should be effective and efficient. In its management, water resources must be seen as one unified whole, both rain water, surface water and ground water. As part of other ecological environment which can not be separated, such as agriculture, forestry, fisheries, health, cultural and various other development activities. In water resources management, which is very important is the maintenance of water catchment areas, the recovery of re-refining capacity and the prevention of damage due to water management needs of a growing industry.
