Productivity Enhancement of Tropical Forest

Increasing forest productivity declines with increasing rate of deforestation, illegal logging and conversion of forest land. While demand for forest products continues to increase along with the rate of population growth and industrial property. This causes the imbalance of supply and demand of forest products. The supply of forest products is closely related to the productivity of forest, if you want to increased the supply of forest productivity should be increased.

Current forest condition decreased their productivity along with reduced forest area. According to the results of arrange to utilize the agreement forest, Indonesian forest area recorded 143.57 million hectares. But within 20 years the forest area of Indonesia lived 109.37 million hectares.

During the period of two decades has been the conversion of forest areas into non-forest area of nearly 34 million hectares. Thus deforestation occurs annually covering 1.7 million hectares. Reduction of the largest forest area falling in the forest production reached 31.19 hectares. Furthermore, CPC (2003) reported that today's forests are damaged beyond the area of 42.11 million ha, while those in the area of 59.62 million ha. Configuration of forest destruction in the area are as follows: 44.42 million ha area of damage occurred in the area of production forest (79.19%). While the damage in the protected forest area reached 10.52 million ha (17.64%) and conversion of forest damage in less than 4.69 million ha (7.87%).

There are two ways to increase the productivity of forest resources is the first way of extensification (expansion of the forest) and the second is the intensification growth (growth stand improvement). The first way is rather difficult to do because of the fact that forest land is always a target for the development of new areas so that there are over land use from forestry to non-forestry. The second way is more possible with the technology include ways to improve growth riap. So the form which is developed forest plantations. From bio-production side, so that these plantations grow optimally in principle there are two aspects of the material first and second plants is a process or treatment (treatment). Plant material must use superior materials and the treatment (process) by implementing intensive Silviculture System.
